Do Research Over the Summer!
If you are interested in doing scientific research (in any science - not just math) over the summer, you should think about applying to an REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program. These are summer research programs for undergraduates run by various colleges and universities and sponsored by the National Science Foundation. They usually run for about 8 weeks, and you get paid for participating!

If this sounds interesting, here is a web site on which you can find a list of all the NSF-sponsored REU programs organized by subject (math, chemistry, etc.) and links to their homepages.

Every year, lots of SUMS members go to REU programs in lots of different subjects. Click here to see a list of the students who participated last year.

UR Students Present Research in Baltimore
Four UR students went to the Joint Math Meetings in Baltimore this month to present research they did last summer in their REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) programs.

Ethan Coon gave the 20-minute talk "Asymptotic analysis of finite deformation in a nonlinear transversely isotropic incompressible hyperelastic half-space subjected to a tensile point load" in the AMS-MAA-SIAM Special Session on Research in Mathematics by Undergraduates. He also presented a poster with the same title in the MAA poster session. Ethan won a prize of $100 for his poster!

Niles Johnson presented the poster "The Taylor expansion of a Riemannian Metric" at the poster session.

Matthew Willyard presented the poster "A mathematical model for an electro-pneumatic pulsed jet actuator" at the poster session. Matt also won a $100 prize for his poster!

Sarah Zubairy presented the poster "Natural boundary of the Euler product of local zeta function associated with the polynomial F(x,y)=x2+y3" at the poster session.

Congratulations to Ethan, Niles, Matt and Sarah for their outstanding work!
