Subject: Minutes for last meeting

Hi everybody!

After randomly looking over the constitution we wrote for SUMS, I noticed that as secretary, I'm supposed to take minutes at the meeting. I figured that as a co-author, I should do my best to stick to the constitution, especially considering that it's not even a year old yet!! ;-)

Meeting called to order at 7:10pm * Introduction of the officers:

  • Davis Doherty - President
  • Andrew Blechman (ME!) - Secretary
  • Katie Schack - Director of Events
  • Robert Fowler - Business Manager (NP)
  • Kate Coleman - Director of Publicity

* REU (the feture topic!)

  • Even the freshmen should consider it, although it's harder to get.
  • You can do research for experience and MONEY $$$ !
  • You've all probably seen all of the REU stuff Professor Gage has been sending around. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Kate, Davis and myself have all done it, and it was a great experience! Feel free to email any of us with questions. Also check out the SUMS page (follow the link from http://www.math.rochester.edu).
  • Professor Gonek showed up armed with his experiences as an undergraduate.

* Talks and events

  • We are planning to have a multitude of talks and events this year.
  • Gillian's and Distillery and Empire Brewery parties.
  • Laser tag with SPS (physics society).
  • Golden Key Honors Society - requests to do stuff together!
  • Any other ideas, please email an officer.

* Math lounge and other resources

The math lounge (believe it or not) is primarely designed for US, the undergraduates! You are welcome to go up there (Hylan 9th floor) and study, eat, watch TV (if you're not disturbing anyone, of course!), make yourself a cup of espresso (talk to Davis or myself for quick lesson on how to use and clean), or just relax and read a book (there are plenty of NON-TEXTBOOK math books up there, as well as journals and newspapers). At this point, you cannot get a key until you become a major, but you can still go up there any time it's open (something like business hours)! You are also welcome to attend the Math Colloquia, which are talks that are given at an "undergraduate level". Last semester, they were on Fridays; I don't know what they are now, but emails will be going out with news as they come.

That was it! If anyone has any ideas about the upcoming semester, please don't hesitate to contact an officer.

Finally, welcome to the students added to the list. Please feel free to take advantage of SUMS's resources.

Happy Integrating!

-A
